The Importance of Relaxation During Pregnancy And Beyond

Stress plays a role in all of our lives and, on one level it is good for us, including  pregnant or postnatal women; But prolonged stress can have a negative affect on our physical and mental well-being and especially our unborn baby.  Research was undertaken by Professor Vivete Glove, Consultant Obstetrician at Imperial College London and Pampa Sarkar at Wexham Park Hospital, who both looked into the effect that stress has on an unborn baby during pregnancy. Their findings were that stress hormones were released to the unborn baby as early as 17 weeks, proving the importance of managing stress levels. The body feels stronger and more energised in pregnancy when in a relaxed state, therefore making the journey of pregnancy more manageable and more enjoyable, as you are able to cope with the increasing physical, emotional and mental changes you are going through. This also has a positive effect on your baby and research suggests that this leads to a more happy and calmer baby. The same Positive effects apply for labour and in the exciting , but  challenging Postnatal period.
