Pregnancy Massage Questions and Answers
Looking after your body, mind and emotions in Pregnancy is one of the biggest gifts you can give to yourself and your growing baby.
Modern times have changed, and the majority of women and pregnant women lead very busy and demanding lives. Women do not just look after the home and older children, but also work full or part time, with some women working right up until 37 weeks of pregnancy. Working so late in pregnancy is fine if you feel well enough to do so, but quite often we carry on even when our body is calling out for some much needed rest. Rest is very important during pregnancy, as our bodies will be working twice as hard.
When you are feeling physically uncomfortable or not being able to have the time to just focus on your growing baby, changing body, fears or having opportunities to relax, can also lead to stress.
Pregnancy Massage is an amazingly simple and effective tool that allows mothers the opportunity to let go for a hour or two, be it weekly, fortnightly or monthly, and can make such a difference to many women’s Pregnancy experience. Firstly, Pregnancy Massage slows down stress hormones (Adrenaline & Cortisol) and encourages the flow of the body's feel good hormones (Endorphins, Opamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin). These hormones do not only make you feel relaxed, calm, balanced and recharged, but the same effect is also passed on to your growing baby while he or she is in Utreo (Womb).
These hormones also play a vital role during labour and the birthing process, and work at optimum levels when the body is as relaxed as possible. Practicing to relax during your massage treatment is really beneficial as it also prepares your body for your baby’s birth at the same time. Having regular Pregnancy Massage treatments will give you knowledge of your body, help you gain confidence, combat any fears you may have regarding the impending birth or learn new birthing options and find out where you hold tension and how to release it effectively. Mother & Bump clients are empowered with information, resources and referrals with the outcome being an enjoyable Pregnancy and looking forward to birth without fear. What does Pregnancy Massage consist of?
Pregnancy Massage is a combination of Swedish Massage techniques combined with Shiatsu, Lymphatic Drainage, and Deep Tissue Massage, but is also dependent on the needs of the individual client.
What will a session involve?
The session will involve a client consultation, massage and some light stretching. Additionally, these sessions may also include breathing and visualisation work, exercise tips and advice and an end of session review. It may well be that you desire just a relaxing treatment with none of the above. Mother and Bump Massage aim to meet all your needs and this will be discussed with your Therapist before we begin, so you get the best results from your treatment.
What equipment do Mother and Bump Massage supply for a home based treatment?
You do not need to supply anything. Mother and Bump Massage supply all equipment for treatments which include:
- Massage Table
- Birthing Ball
- Massage Wax
- Fresh & Clean Towels
- Music
- Pillows & bolsters
- Health forms
- Exersise sheets
- Useful information sheets
What do I need to provide for you?
All that we request is that you have a room large enough for set up, so our therapist may work freely around the treatment table. We also request that your pets are out of the way for the duration of your massage treatment.
How will I be positioned?
The current stage of pregnancy determines the positioning for the massage. Most 1st Trimester Clients are still able to lay face down on the Massage couch, but will be adapted to side lying if preferred (due to sore breasts).
Clients in the 2nd Trimester are positioned normally in a side lying position with Pillows and Bolsters to support your changing shape; you can also lay in the semi-reclined position if preferred and if suitable for your body.
3rd Trimester Clients are placed in the side lying position as this is the most comfortable and safe position. Or you can even be positioned semi-reclined. This again is dependent on the client's needs.
What if I suffer with Pelvic Griddle Pain?
If you are suffering with Pelvic Griddle pain and you would prefer not to lie down, we can adapt and accommodate you by using a birthing ball, a chair or simply using the sitting position. We will work with you in order to find the best position that you are most comfortable with.
What if I am under specialist care?
Mother and Bump Massage will provide you with a Health Consultation Form which will be completed prior to your appointment. We will give you the opportunity to tell us of any health issues that you may have. In most cases we can still treat you, as long as we have permission by your specialist or GP.
What type of products do you use?
We use handmade Emerease massage wax for consistency and high quality. Emerease only use natural ingredients that leave the skin nourished and soft to touch. The unscented wax includes Shea butter which adds a velvety texture for a luxurious feel.
If you prefer an alternative, we also offer 100% natural vegetable oil; typically Grape seed, Almond or Jojoba oil. All our products are perfectly safe to use during Pregnancy.
